Monastic Life

The Monastic Brotherhood of Saints Alban and Æthelwold is a community of Orthodox monastics following the Rule of Saint Benedict. The monastics live in hermitage style cells on the grounds of Buittle Castle, in the manner of Holy Cross Hermitage in its early days, and, indeed, the Abbey of Cluny. The Brotherhood meet together several times a day for the Divine Office in the Orthodox Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, Undercroft, located on the ground floor of the medieval tower of the Castle. We have exciting plans for the further development of the monastic enclosure, including the construction of a new church, offering further space for the monastic community. Our daily ordo and the liturgical material we use, which is a compilation of the medieval Benedictine offices translated into English, have been kindly provided to us by our brother Antiochian monastics at the Monastery of Our Lady and St. Lawrence (Ladyminster) in Colarado.
